I got e-mail about it recently:

To make it easier for people to reach you over video call or text, the phone number(s) for your DEVICE_NAME are being verified and added to your Google Accounts.

How it works

Google will periodically obtain your number from your carrier by exchanging device info, such as your SIM card identifier, to enable Google services (standard message and data rates may apply).

You can manage this setting anytime on your DEVICE_NAME by going to Settings > Google services > All services > Phone number verification.

Verified numbers are added to all Google Accounts signed in to your DEVICE_NAME. To manage the phone numbers in your account, go to account settings.

It might seem like a shady practice, especially because it was set to function by default, but there's also a good rationale for allowing Google to do this, as it improves the sharing functionality across your Google accounts, and makes things like phone recovery much easier, in the event that you lose your phone and want to restore a new phone to the old one's settings. There's also a slew of quality-of-life features, from faster sign-ins to emergency location services, that work better or faster with this feature enabled.

Of course, there's also an incentive for Google as well, since connecting all your Google accounts via phone number helps to optimize their ad performance, allowing them to show you more targeted advertisements across your devices or accounts.

It is not about loosing your phone it is only about selling you!

Not to mention there's a chasm of difference between prompting you to enable and just doing it.

So glad I've degoogled.

I don't seem to have any of the settings relating to it on my device nor in google account manager in a browser. I'm guessing this is because I'm in Japan but I'm not sure.

It has been years, maybe more than a decade since I lasted used any of Google’s office equivelent. It has been close to two years since I cancelled my Youtube premium and started using different youtube ad blocking things, it has been about a month since I started using sponsor block (I am currently using Librewolf and ad guard). I stopped using gmail years ago, as I have horrid around with different mail hosts, I recently counted and if I some how see the 22nd century I will have averaged a little more than 1 email host a decade! I have been off and on with Google ads with a pihole setup for closs to a decade, I have it tuned better than ever before. I have a firewall running OpenWRT that blocks things, I am sure there are Google trackers/bots doing stuff and getting into my honey pot! I sadly was an Apple fan girl but next year I plan on getting a Motorolla phone that can get GraphenOS I try to find new ways to degoogle frequently.

Why are we being made to sign into the Google accounts website to change setting that originated from the phone? This should be in the settings area of the phones themselves. I hate Google.

Am I the only one that can't find "Google services" in my settings app? Pixel 10.
