The songs that still read as themselves after an 8-bit pass are the ones whose hook is one line you can put on two pulse channels. Take On Me and Africa stay obvious that way: the snare just becomes a short noise burst and you lose the gated reverb, which is half the 80s drum sound. Mid-80s ballads that live on pads and chorus turn into a thin beep and stop sounding like the record. If any of these keep the bass on the triangle channel instead of a pulse, those are the ones I would start with. |
