The primary violations under international law include: The Geneva Conventions (Specifically the Third Geneva Convention). The Third Geneva Convention (GCIII) governs the treatment of Prisoners of War. Key violations include: Article 13 (Humane Treatment): POWs must always be humanely treated. Any unlawful act causing death or seriously endangering the health of a POW is prohibited. Protection against Public Curiosity: Article 13 explicitly states that POWs must be protected at all times, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity. Forcing detainees onto public broadcasts or social media to mock their country or international law directly violates this. Article 14 (Respect for the Person): POWs are entitled in all circumstances to respect for their persons and their honour. The Prohibition of Torture and Degrading Treatment. Forcing detainees into humiliating situations violates absolute prohibitions established in both wartime and peacetime: The Convention against Torture (CAT): Prohibits not only physical torture but also cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions: Outlaws 'outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment' against anyone not taking an active part in hostilities. International Human Rights Law (IHRL). If the detainees are civilians or held outside an active armed conflict, their treatment violates: Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR): No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. Article 10 of the ICCPR: All persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person. Legal Classification. Serious violations of these rules—especially those under the Geneva Conventions—constitute war crimes. Individuals who order, commit, or film such acts can be prosecuted under international criminal law, including by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
