Taiwanese chip design conglomerate Egis Group signed strategic partnership and investment agreements with French processor designer SiPearl on Thursday, advancing its plans for a platform that integrates specialized chips from different suppliers.

The partnership includes joint development of the Mobius100 central processing unit (CPU) and expansion into Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said Cindy Chen (陳巧昕) of Alcor Micro Corp., an Egis Group subsidiary developing the processor. The partnership combines Egis' chip technology with SiPearl's software and system expertise.

Manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Rhea1 will be used in the CPU cluster of Germany's JUPITER supercomputer. SiPearl delivered the first samples to supercomputer maker Bull in September for integration into the system.

Egis' strategy spans processor development, chip interconnect technology and design services. Chen said the business rationale was to build a network of compatible components and partners to meet increasingly diverse artificial intelligence (AI) computing needs.

Chiplets are individual chips with specialized functions that can be combined within a single package. Designers can use different manufacturing processes for different functions and reuse existing components across products, she explained.

Chen described the SiPearl partnership as long term, adding that cooperation on later generations of chiplet products was under discussion ... Egis was [also] joining SiPearl's Series B funding round.
