I only recognize PewDiePie in the top middle and his placement here confuses me. Like if playing horror games for fun then going all in on Linux is considered ruining a generation I don't wanna know what a healthy generation looks like.

Top right is a guy I used to follow before I realised he probably wasn't the healthiest guy to listen to. AmazingAtheist I believe. At the time when I was a teenager he made me more able to articulate some of the inherent hypocrisies and similarities between religions (Christmas took over a pagan holiday, which took it from something else, and on it goes all the way back to ancient Egyptian mythology, for example). But then I think he also turned a lot of us into know-it-all little shits who wouldn't shut the fuck up.

As a young streamer he said a lot of stupid Edge Lord shit to get attention. That doesn't make it good or acceptable. It's just what it was. He seems to have gone on to be a much more normal person. He's now living in Japan with his wife doing Linux and open source stuff apparently.

AFAIK he said the nono word once in PUBG in that infamous clip but I’m not aware of anything else (tho admittedly I don’t follow him and what he’s up to). But who of us hasn’t blurted out some shit in the heat of the moment (but not with lots of people watching lmaö)

He was a toxic racist edgelord for most of his career, normalising the sort of language we see perpetuated today by alt-right chuds for teenagers at the time.

When I was 11 I was subscribed to Steven crowder because of the engagement bait he used to pull… now I am quite different. I think I turned out fine though. More issues stemmed from lack of social development and sport participation. I wouldn’t say it “ruins” an entire generation. Honestly kids shouldn’t be default subscribing to ideas without at least a conception of the ability to challenge those ideas first. My next door neighbor’s boys are subscribed to the manosphere stuff on YouTube too. Parents honestly need to step in and at least ask their kids who they are listening to on a daily basis in a supportive way

With the rapid rise of the alt-right fueled by people like these streamers spreading and normalising this, I would say this has certainly ruined a large portion of young men and enabled the sort of open acceptable bigotry we live in today.

I find it funny that you reflexively downvoted my comment despite the fact that you basically agreed with what I said. And to be clear I agree with you 100%. What he did horribly influenced the whole generation of young men. Whether or not he meant it. And perhaps I came off a bit too neutral or flippant about it. But I was never debating his inclusion in the list.

Sorry, it seemed to be in agreement with the person you replied to and normalising him by downplaying the effect of what he did.

It’s better if they weren’t broadcasting these ideas, but there honestly needs to be a certain amount of participation by the parents. I’ll admit that this content isn’t good at all but it’s almost inevitable given the world’s political climate and the fact that most of what they’re saying isn’t outright violating platforms’ TOS. Giving a child with a very underdeveloped brain unrestricted internet access is… admittedly not a great move by a parent, that’s what happened to me anyways, and even though I was unscathed it is something I experienced first hand, now that I am old enough to recognize it.

That's fair. Like I said I know I don't always do the best job of articulating my thoughts. Sometimes leaving things incomplete. But no I could never agree with something like that. 🤜

Becuase they all pushed a generation of teenage boys into the alt-right pipeline and normalised the toxic shit. It’s no different to manosphere content today doing the same thing.

Social "progress" initiatives set the stage. Maybe if they meaningfully included the impact on boys and men of their progressive demands, we might not be here. But now we all suffer that lack of empathy.

I know a least a few who were plenty old enough to not fall for the manosphere stuff and still went in hook, line, and sinker. Whole grown-ass men who apparently lacked any vestige of critical thinking.

On the plus side, it makes it easy to see how to remove that toxicity from your life before it gets too close. "Oh I saw this guy on JRE, and he said..."

Nope. Crisis averted.

He also dressed like a nazi, did the nazi salute, paid fiver (iirc it was fiver) people to hold up signs that said death to all jews in public, recommended videos by racist, and anti-Semitic, creators, and a bunch of other things. Then, when he decided to stop, he didn't really apologize, or say he didn't believe that stuff, or that promoting that shit, even in humor, was bad, he said he had already used it to push his channel, and it was stupid to use it again, now that he got from it what he wanted.

Take out the corporate funding from both progressives and oppressives and see which actually fails.

Shoehorning the oppression with the backing of billionaires is why progressives are failing, because oppression is profitable.

Add Crowder to the list, Jordan Peterson (not his channel, but people uploading compilations of him "destroying someone with facts and logic"), and 1791.

Ashamed that I started going down this road, and nearly fell down this pipeline. Would have stopped me realising I was a woman and a lesbian, and would have led me to hold ideals riddled with such hate and vitriol that I can't even begin to consolidate with my current views.

Society fails sons. Parents spend less time with their kids than institutions and peer groups do. This isn't a failure of personal parenting, it's a failure of society.

I find that people like Crowder, Peterson, Rogan, and Shapiro have very valid views. I do not agree with everything they say/believe, but nobody should.

My question to you is why you believe you, "nearly fell down this pipeline". What pipeline, exactly? If you can think for yourself than you should never feel threatened by ideas, no matter who they come from or what they affiliate with. How could this proposed pipeline have stopped you from realizing you are a gay woman? If you are a woman then you are a woman, that isn't complicated stuff (though some people sure make it out to be.) And who cares if someone is gay? The notion of sexual orientation seems silly to me because nobody is sexually interested in everyone of a given sex, we're all sexually interested in **features **some people may have, and I don't care what features someone is interested in. It doesn't really define a person.

To this day I still listen to what those people have to say sometimes. I throw out the things I disagree with and question things that seem shady until I can do my own investigating. Never have any of these people, "filled me with such hate and vitriol" that something or another occured.

I believe in equality under the law for everyone. I think all people should be treated fairly and with respect, BARRING their life choices (rapists and murderers I do not believe (for example) should be treated with the same level of respect as a good, innocent person.) I do not believe anyone is greater or lesser based on sex, sexual orientation, race, etc. I consider myself rational, logical, objective, and free-thinking, and more open minded than most people who think they're open minded.

You can't put some people into these buckets and just declare that they are bad people who will taint and tarnish others. You and I both have free will (in a manner of speaking, anyway) and at the end of the day it is up to us to sift through the information coming at us and weed out the bullshit from what is simply true.

But here is the problem... Many people feel angered, scared of, or even hurt by the truth. Nobody said that the truth was easy. Making up our own stories so that they protect our mentality and how we feel is oftentimes a lot easier than dealing with an existence that most likely contains no overarching god-being that frankly does not care what happens to us. Human existence isn't fair, it isn't just, it isn't always good, and sometimes the bad guys win. Once you can accept that the truth can be very ugly but it still remains the truth and you can accept those truths, the better off you make yourself, and the stronger you become.

We're here for a blip of time then we're gone forever and none of us are ever coming back. Nothing has any objective meaning so we have to make meaning for ourselves. I choose to live a life filled with love and compassion, but coupled with the strength to say that if you attack me and those things/people of which I love, I will do everything in my power to snuff you out to protect those loves in my world.

But I digress, my interests here are why you believe you can so quickly correlate some of the people shown here as some kind of hate-filled monsters. I don't see them that way - not a single one of them. I would take a step back and - in all honesty and with respect - ask you what it is within you that filles you with the vitriol to believe this in the first place, and why do you feel so threatened by ideas?

Take Peterson for example. I've listened to a lot of Peterson's lectures and other discussions. Not once have I ever felt that Peterson's ultimate points have been to harm anyone. I don't agree with everything he says, I'll again make that clear, but he has points that I would argue are quite valid and can make you expand your thinking. But listen to Peterson, not his "followers". Don't let them take him out of context.

That being said, here are a few more things about me: I don't vote. I consider both democrats and republicans to be brainwashed. I find politics to be sinister at its core. I believe everyone should be treated well, barring they are good people who deserve it. I don't want to hurt anyone, or take anything from anyone. I want everyone to be allowed to live the way they like so long as it isn't harming others, and I'm a staunch atheist.

I very likely don't even fit into a single basket you might often casually place people in. When I used to post on Reddit for instance, the leftists would call me a altright and the rightoids would say I was a libtard. THIS - if you ask me - is about the stage when you know your worldview is probably about as correct as it's gonna ever be.

This is a good faith conversation, by the way. I am genuinely interested in how people think.

By "pipeline" I mean the pipeline where all the algorithms that be are recommending you seemingly innocuous content alongside your usual things, but it slips the odd "maybe the trans people shouldn't be able to ask you to use their correct pronouns" in with the rest. I am personifying, sure.

Disgusting people have said correct things before, but I do not put myself in a position to hear what they have to say generally. I don't write off every view or opinion that someone has once I have discovered them for their ugliness. But I do approach their words with more scrutiny.

The pipeline is real - it is in part a sad accident of how the popular social media algorithms work, in part an intentionally manufactured thing by the most powerful machine of the modern age which no individual can withstand (marketing and advertising, alongside the ultra wealthy), all wrapped up with some good old boiling of the frog.

I truly don't have nearly as much energy for this conversation as you clearly do - and I do not mean that negatively. If you find value in anything they say, more power to you, I won't stop you.

You have made some deeply, deeply heavy assumptions about me, my point I was making in my original comment, and my assumptions about you (of which I have precisely zero) that all go way beyond what I said, however, and I think that you may find that worth examining in your own time, or not
