"Apple did not say what causes the cracking, or if a fix is planned. Affected users have been able to get in-store replacements, though with limited stock available, some are having to wait.

According to Apple, the problem is limited in scope. Most users are not going to see an issue with their ‌iPhone Duo‌ display, and it's not a defect people have to worry about showing up over time. On affected units, the crack seems to show up shortly after purchase. "

Hmm, we only have 'shortly after purchase' so far. Cracks that develop after that I guess we will have to see!

Probably the same kind of flaw.

The iPhone 4 had reception issues because of the way it was being used in the real world and Apple was so insulated that their testing didn’t account for it.

Bet that’s why screens are failing in the real world even though they stress-tested them in a controlled environment.

Oh gee. That. And remember how it ended up getting better by the EOL of that phone with just software updates?

Dickyapples.

Stuff like this is why I generally don’t like to be an early adopter

Wish there was a way to gauge the extent of the issue. Since all the images show the crack at the exact same spot, if we knew how many devices were actually affected, we could speculate whether it’s truly a faulty batch as Apple is suggesting or a genuine design flaw. Time will tell, I guess.

Hugely embarrassing if it’s the latter since Apple’s been cooking this up for nearly a decade

Who actually wanted this?

The people that bought them, presumably.

I’m sure this is a situation where defects are happening at about the same small rate as any other new product has defects, but we love to hate on Apple so it’s “new iPhones are already breaking!”

Well, the bathtub curve is shaped like that for a reason, across all sorts of products. We'll see if this is one of them.

More of a really heavy gift certificate to the Apple store.

It's not to prevent cracking.

Who is downvoting this?? It's a good point. Multiply by a billion customers and any company is going to have "a lot" of really stupidly broken models.

Probably because it’s speculating baselessly in response to me saying I wish there was a basis to speculate on 🤷

Op wanted an actual gauge. Response was "Im sure it's small in scope" with zero data.

Not agreeing in the least.

Like really? Cmon man.

OP just posted the article. If you mean top level commenter then they weren't asking anything. The person who responded also said they don't know.
