A Newsweek poll conducted on October 4-5, 2001 found that 58 percent of Americans believed that U.S. support for Israel was a major reason why terrorists attacked the United States. This was a few weeks after the September 11 attacks. The poll was done by Princeton Survey Research Associates for Newsweek. The question asked if opposition to US ties to Israel and US policies toward the Palestinians was a major reason for the attacks. 58 percent said yes. In an earlier Newsweek poll from September 20-21, 2001, 68 percent said the same. The number dropped to 58 percent by early October. The poll also found that 63 percent of Americans did not think that reducing ties with Israel would reduce terrorist acts against the US. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released a press release on November 1, 2001 titled 'Conspiracy Theories and Criticism of Israel in Aftermath of Sept. 11 Attacks.' The ADL press release addressed these findings.
