It won't be long before the website is gone entirely and you have to use the app.

I was barely using it from a mobile browser for a game I liked. Looks like I’ll go 0% reddit then.

Good! Finally the last holdover users will reconsider open source alternatives

What we need now is for every modteam on Reddit who have an alternative on Lemmy, to actually advertise it. Now is the time to do so.

A pinned post should do great to point people in the right direction

I gave up on reddit when they banned 3rd-party API access. I use Boost for Lemmy so it looks like reddit minus the karma whores, bots, and general shittiness.

I suppose some reddit users might find the distributed nature of the fediverse too complicated, but honestly I'm not sure if those folks would be much of a benefit to us here.

The holdover users already have accounts, so this change will not affect them.

This is already the experience if you're on a common VPN, which you should be if you live pretty much anywhere in the world.

It's infuriating because Reddit is still a good source of information on really specific topics. Time to make a throwaway account I guess.

I think that's the overall goal. Much harder to block ads and they can collect a ton more data.

Obfuscation of your advertising/government profile and removal of corporate and government censorship (which now affects more than a quarter of Americans).

Those two things are valuable to the average person. Even the average American given how disliked the average American is by the current government and how many times in the last couple of years government agents have started to arrest people over twitter comments.

It doesn't, at least not for the average user. It might prevent your ISP from looking at your traffic, but modern networks are far better in that regard with encrypted SSL traffic and DNS than it used to be.

onbording through apps is good enough that users might not even notice a difference, the main hurdle is understanding the interconnectivity of instances and them actually leaving their jail

I mean, this has pretty big ramifications across the web as a whole. This is going to signal to other platforms that they should do the same, and huge swaths of the internet are going to be effectively inaccessible to search engines.

This makes it much harder to find information online without sacrificing more of your privacy. We do care about this.

Currently old.reddit now requires an account to be logged in in order to view it.

Suspended accounts are also experiencing issues browsing old reddit since the update.

Additionally /r/all has been disabled and trying to access it from old.reddit results in a Reddit message saying “your network has been blocked.”

I can’t wait for the site to completely die.

Sad thing ad networks will perceive it to be better since they better tie tracking between networks and thus better impressions. Don't matter to me though I just recently gone the next step of filtering Readit out of my search results and have never been happier.

The argument would be that they provide " higher quality, more targeted views" which is probably correct.

Most people will fold and get the account, what's one more " sign in with Google" on top of the 1000 other accounts.

I stopped using reddit primarily when the 3rd party API blocking started. I had been browsing anonymously to lurk a few different communities for a bit after that, but I often left just being annoyed how much a waste of time it always was. I haven't been back since the blocked old reddit for anyone not logged in. Can't say my life is any worse without it.

Maybe ads have two messages in such a scenario. One advertisement for human viewing and another hidden function with prompt injection, prompt leaking or other function for AI bots. Ah, glorious dystopia…

But how does a VPN prevent those things? It doesn't, at least not for the average user. It might prevent your ISP from looking at your traffic, but modern networks are far better in that regard with encrypted SSL traffic and DNS than it used to be.

But how does a VPN prevent those things?

Alone, it's not the most effective, like the lock on your front door handle. Like the lock on your front door handle, it only keeps out the honest criminals.

Your Advertising profile, in the US the most common one is your Credit/Consumer Profile, tracks your ip address, browsing habits (through super cookies/app sniffing), and your overall fingerprint on the internet. This means Google really does know you visited facebook 12857192 times in the last year, it knows you searched your old crush's name, and it knows the size of the sex toy you most likely are to buy based on how many seconds you spent on sex-toys.jesus thanks to google analytics plugins tracking your ip address back to the same one you used on google, the same one you used on facebook, etc.

Giving them a common, easily searchable, easily provable (without a warrant) data point to tie all their other data points is literally doing their work for them, and is making them wealthier than all their other business ventures combined. If you use a vpn and regularly change your ip address, fingerprinting is harder. If you use a slightly hardened browser and/or mobile OS, fingerprinting is harder. The less information they have on you, the less information they can sell to the government without a warrant.

This is like if you had a magic button to change the license plate on your car. Flock would be worthless, for the most part. Yes Flock collects a lot of other data, but if you cannot tie that data confidently to a single user, it becomes useless and worthless.

--

Secondly, many VPNs do not keep logs, many do not run their software on persistent media whatsoever, preventing all possible warrant scenarios, even if they were in a country that was able to send them a warrant.

This prevents one data point in government tracking, the easiest one to explain to a judge. The easiest one to explain to a jury. If you make a comment on twitter that ICE doesn't like, they will subpoena twitter for your ip, subpoena your ISP for your personal information, and then pay you a visit.

Guess what they have to do if you have a VPN? They have to subpoena twitter for your email/phone address/device ID/IMEI/etc, then, with varying levels of difficulty, all of which can be avoided using simple opsec tactics, subpoena all of those related companies, and then hope you used personal information like your personal IP when interacting with any of those services, and then pay you a visit if, with all this extra work ALL OF WHICH HAS A LAYER OF PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY THE MORE LAYERS YOU HAVE, convince a judge to let them pay you a visit.

Given how quickly it is becoming illegal to be trans in the united states, gay people aren't far behind, and honestly anyone brown should already be on a vpn and have anonymized online accounts when posting, you should be working on reducing your fingerprint-ability via every means. Given you can get a vpn for 5 euros a month paid through monero, there's no real excuse not to have that easy extra layer.

Surveillance capitalism follows the same rules as capitalism; do whatever is most profitable. The deception/manipulation/propaganda algos are 10-1000x more valuable when they're able to target you as an individual; across all accounts, space, and time. The users hardest to swindle, who already gave a shit about privacy/anonymity, have already left.

Most advertising on reddit is guerrilla marketing, and reddit either runs their own bots or explicitly enables them to inflate activity and engagement.
