As a cop drives down the road right next to you, matching your speed, this is what happens:

  • You want to look over to see if he is looking at you. But if you do, then that in itself raises suspicion and also brings a legal risk that you are seen to have taken your eyes off the road. So you turn your head just enough to get their eyes in your periphery but hope you are regarded as looking at street signs.
  • If your seatbelt is off, you need to get it on but without making any noticeable movement to that effect. So at a sloth pace you very subtly get your left arm looped in and as a separate slow waisteline movement get the buckle in place.
  • If you’re over the limit, you obviously can’t just take your foot off the gas because the dramatic speed change is too noticeable. So you let off the gas ever so slowly so that the cop possibly questions whether he was not keeping his own throttle perfectly still.
  • You wonder about trivial laws.. must both hands be on the steering wheel? You get both hands on just to give the appearance of perfect Mr Rogers compliance.
  • If you get pulled over while being black, you follow Chris Rock’s procedure.. you don’t just pop open the glove box at a normal pace because fast movements get you shot. Every movement is slow and announced.

By comparison, banks have become like cops now because a flood of anti-human rights law under the guise of KYC/AML has converted banks into cops. So:

  1. You don’t just pop into your bank and ask for cash. Some banks alert the police simply for asking for too much. And the definition of “too much” is often secret and also secretly dropping. It’s much less than you expect. It’s like making a fast reach for the glove box while being black in a US red state.
  2. Read your bank’s most recent ToS. Make sure you know how much cash you’re even allowed to pull out. In much of Europe, asking for €3k is eyebrow-raising. Some banks have reached a level of nannying that high cash withdrawal fees trigger when you pull out more than $/€ 300 in a month.
  3. Also about making fast moves: make an appointment to withdraw cash and tell them in advance how much you will take. Some banks keep their vault shut and hostility emerges if they think you expect them to open the vault spontaneously. They need to know how much to take out in the morning before your withdrawal.
  4. If you gamble at casinos, you’re best off finding the ATM limit and then making routine max withdrawals as an on-going habit. Don’t deviate because the AI algos get trigger happy with suspicion. You may find that you’re fucked. If your bank has a 300/month limit and you want to gamble with 10k, it will take you 3 years(!) of ATM withdrawals to reach that bankroll. OTOH, if you think you can just walk into the bank and ask for 10k, they will interrogate in the least.
  5. Cash deposits are a problem too. A (non-criminal) European simply tried to deposit €50 cash he received as a gift and was interrogated about the source of it. The bank did not want the burden of the paper trail so they talked him out of making the deposit.
  6. ATM transactions now have AI bots looking to freeze your acct or eat your card.

Regarding point ⑥:

I tried to make a foreign currency withdrawal and got the currency conversion backwards so I slightly exceeded a limit. Of course the ATMs are as vague as possible about the problem (in fact, they outright lie) because every failure/refusal implies a crime to them and they don’t want to inform a criminal. So I retried the same amount at different machines. The AI bot decided it was suspicious enough to try different ATMs to freeze the account. By the time I realised I got the conversion wrong and asked for too much, I was already fucked by the lockout.

Some banks will force you into an alarming fraud interview over the phone and try to coerce you to say you don’t recognise a transaction or figure. If they succeed, you’re fucked more than a freeze because they cancel the card and you have to wait for a new card with new number to arrive at your home (while you are overseas!).

In my case, the banker misread a transaction and asked “did you make a 6k purchase yesterday?” Me: “hell no”.. Then we have to treat this as fraud. But in reality that so-called purchase was actually just an ATM asking for the balance or limit or something that did not result in a movement. So the banker did not understand their own UI.

Watch out for ATMs that are designed to suck your card completely into the ATM, and avoid them. The reason for that design is so that if the stupid-ass AI bot decides it thinks there may be fraud (b/c e.g. you get your PIN wrong), it can confiscate your card without even giving a specific reason and without informing you of that risk before using the ATM. This is comparable to a cop seizing your cash based arbitrarily on unjustified suspicion (e.g. carrying cash in itself is becoming “suspicious”). It is impossible to get your card back from the ATM. You can only ask your card issuer for another card and they have a right to charge you a fee for that.
