In Gnosticism, a person can be in one of three "states". They can be a Hylic, a person of purely material realm, a Psychic, a person more spiritually and mentally advanced than a Hylic, and A Pneumatic, a person of spirit, capable of Gnosis.

That is just the simplest explanation, I'm not going to go on a tirade explaining Gnosticism.

So, here's the question, if Hylics are just basically flesh automata without a soul, then they would be equivalant to the modrn NPC meme. No soul, no thought of their own, just machines following a script. Basically Patrick Bateman but not nearly as intelligent.
