Sometimes a Boondocks quote embodies the principles of anarcho-antirealism. For example, Jesus was from the middle east, and we don't usually call most people over there black. It's more common to call them brown. But Huey Freeman correctly intuits that blackness is a somewhat malleable social construct which can be stretched to make a particular point, and that Jesus is more important as a myth than as a man. Those are some soulist rhetorical moves - mythcrafting to produce a reaction that is similar in character to how one would feel if fully informed, but with maximal speed and effect. |

Hmm, i don't think Jesus was black. Given the appearance of local people's from Palestine/ME during the period it's more likely he looked like an Arab, not European or Black |

Yeah, but that's close enough to black to send a certain very true message to white people, while sounding more punchy |

Jesus from Nazarareth (Yeshuaʿ bar Yehosef) was a rabbi, a Jew, and spoke Aramaic. His hair and skin color is unknown, but likely typical for the region i.e. white to olive brown skin and dark hair. If he had been a pale redhead or very dark, it would have been written down somewhere. Jesus would not have known about the modern concepts of white and black, nor do I think would he care much about them. Portraying Jesus as white with blond hair and blue eyes, or as black was also motivated by antisemitism. If you blame Jews for killing Jesus and lots of other things, you have to put some distance between Jesus and his Jewishness. Jesus came to save all people, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, culture, etc. Jesus is god. God is everything. And in this context Jesus being black is irrelevant or doesn’t make sense without further explanation. Various groups have adapted Jesus in many ways for good and bad reasons. I think focusing on imagery depicting Jesus is a distraction or even contrary to the commandment against making graven image. Idol worship is forbidden, but very common in many Christian practices. Black as a color has some associations in Judaism of grieve, darkness, and oppression. I guess you could base an allegorical argument on this. |
