In this episode we cover the insane supply shortage of RAM due to the AI buildout. It'll be the price and availability of a lot of consumer electronics over the next year.

Khajit has RAM if you have coin.....actually, unless you're a multibillion dollar corporation, you have not enough coin.

I use repairable / upgradable products (MNT laptop, Fairphone cellphones) and I have stocked up on a few critical spare parts, just in case the manufacturers go under.

Other than that, what I have going for me is that I'm a Unix old-timer desperately hooked on the command line. So I use Linux, an ultra-lightweight window manager and zero graphical fluff. And I prefer old games πŸ™‚ So my memory needs are rather limited.

Do you know of some decent Linux phones? Everything I look up is filled with mixed reviews and people saying it's just not there yet for everyday use.

I have Ubuntu Touch going on my Fairphone 5. It's mostly there, but it's missing a properly-working app replacement I absolutely need: Signal. I mean it runs Signal Desktop, but it's somewhat unusable.

I'm seriously considering getting a Fairphone gen 6 in case my current phone goes down anytime soon. How's it been as a daily driver?

I wish my mint experience was like this :^( I had so many random smaller issues and some big issues that I switched to Nobara. Haven't fully tested everything I needed to test but so far it's been alright. My biggest gripe so far is how slow the shutdown speed is...

It is a crisis for consumers, but remember that the whole situation is manufactured and planned by the tech oligarchs.

I was looking into buying an old i5 3570 + mobo + 16gb ddr3 kit to make a nice emulation box using an old gpu that's lying around here, and even that has gone up in price by about 50%...

I bought new RAM last year and it has already gone up 4.5x in price. It’s beyond crazy.

Actually, hard drives, GPUs, memory, and more may soon be unavailable at any price. Just try to buy a hard drive from Western Digital. It's February, and they're already sold out of them for the entire 2026 year.

These AI companies decide to build data centers, obtain cyclical funding, then sign contracts years in advance to install companies' entire production. And the ones actually producing the components are more than happy to allocate all their production because fuck their reputation, fuck their loyal customers, they want all the money now...
