"It will initially be flagships similar to the current generation Motorola Signature, Motorola razr fold and Motorola razr ultra since those will be the 2027 devices meeting our requirements including the expected updates and hardware memory tagging but it can expand over time,"

This is great news in general, but it's also a bit of a bummer that it will (at least initially) be limited to extremely expensive phones. The recently-announced Moto Signature has "a starting MSRP of €999".

But MSRP is a joke so I really have no idea what the street price will be in practice.

So Motorola, the one currently SHOVING "glance ai" down my throat will somehow stop doing that and instead do something nice like ... A privacy focused de-googler?! BIG DOUBT ... Bigly doubt

They don't need to stop, GrapheneOS will just be an officially supported alternative OS. Their own Android flavour can still be as full of crap as ever.

They might realize they can capitalize both markets and be an early adopter to a formerly niche market. Nothing will stop them from passing the "glance ai" on suckers and selling identical hardware with a security focused OS.

Nice. The upcoming Razr Ultra flip phone. Those are nice. Pretty much exactly what I want. An outside display that can pretty much do everything and an inside display that’s very wide for streaming PC games from my desktop. Movies too look great with the nearly 21:9 inner display.

Hoping to see low end devices too. Would love a trial phone. Those Razr flip phones are expensive. Would rather wait for those to be less than half the price used on ebay

Hint, with kidneys bigger is often not better. Ask a nephrologist with help with this choice.

Unless you are in the US, you can't afford a fucking nephrologist.

my two cents, be careful with the folding phones. those inner screens are plastic and scratch super easily. you can't really put a screen protector on them and cases leave the hinges exposed. all the while it's one drop or close away from a screen replacement so expensive you'll just go buy a new phone.

the part alone for one of the razr ultra displays is about 350.

some people really like them but I personally think they're poorly marketed as an every day device. I would love to see graphene os improve the options for the people who do really like the foldables.

I love my foldable and am kinda excited at the idea of graphene OS!

I do worry about the cost, of repair or replacement.

I'm fortunate I can do my own repairs, but still the parts are pricey as you say.

For me the utility of the big screen is worth it!

I favor the left kidney. It's the one that doesn't hurt.

I have and still enjoy my fold, but I took into account the cost of insurance when I got it because I knew the inner screen was susceptible to damage. Had it for two years and just having some minor issues at the edge where it folds now, probably going to about land close to evenly on the cost to insure over the 2 years vs out of pocket repair. They are getting better with the tech tho, and with wider adoption I expect repair costs to decrease in the future. Triple folds are now going to be the area where you're asking for trouble.

Depending on how you use your phone this concern may not be as big as you think, flip phones spend the vast majority of time with the screen closed and protected. My partner got a 2024 Razr and has been using it daily for 1.5yr without any scratches or other screen related issues (there's some expected slowness from the clunky MTK processor of course). I was skeptical of the durability at the time but for $450 with an 18mo warranty including accidental damage figured it was worth the risk. The technology is much more mature than I realized.

I've hated on grapheneos in every thread they reared their ugly head in on account of their elitist disposition, positing that the only way you can feel halfway safe and secure is by spending more money. that's not taking into account the repugnant toxicity demonstrated each and every time them fucks decide to let their feelings be known.

this motorola thing had the potential to end this. things looked good, finally we're done with giving money to google to escape its clutches! good lineup of somewhat old but competent snapdragon tech that has wide alt-OS support.

now that we're out of the "wishing" phase, this thing is a joke. a nothing-burger, aimed at clueless consumerism-addled folks who treat this as rooting for a sports team.

fuck poor people. fuck the truckloads of existing hardware that is more than up to task. only on premium headsets. wait a decade or so before we get around to it. and that's ignoring the idea that everything is gonna cost a multiple of what we're used to due to the global shortage and a coupla three wars out there.

nothing changed. fuck grapheneos.

not so sure, but motorola and lenovo does kinda seem separate tho.

motorola devices have kernel sources on github with full git commit history, my lenovo device (Tab P11 / TB-J606F) had only one kernel source release in a tarball that is not up to date with the stock fw, missing a lot of drivers and doesn't even compile properly (lol)

That's not something the Graphene devs could change. The firmware on the existing truckload of old hardware is simply outdated and insecure. To fix that would require somebody to write completely new firmware for those devices. You're free to take the job. Help the community, and the environment, by reviving all those old devices. Free of charge, or course ;)

Graphene is aimed to provide a secure os for people targeted by attacks which need such things. If you dont need something like this, dont use it.

I like the analogy with cars: not everyone needs an off road ford, but just because you can't afford a humvee dosent mean that someone working at a state park won't need it. The same way, its great that your needs are fulfilled by a golf 4, but those aren't everyone's needs.

Also lineage and calyx are the only real android based systems which address their actual audience. /e/, iode and whatever are worse than stock OS with their integrated subscription DNS blocker and unencrypted cloud services. Calling it anything but a google replacement, as in different name, same shit, is a lie.

because clueless influencers and their ilk are poisoning the media sphere and falsely claiming that grapheneos is the only thing possible and making uninformed people buy this crap, artificially inflating prices - a used pixel costs 4x more than a comparable handset.

if gOS went and published gOS-lite sans the hardware-backed TPM shit - and addressed the oceans of discarded tech we're drowning in - I'd shut the fuck up about it. if the only gOS users were people liberating their pixels, I'd shut the fuck up about it. if only jason bournes were using it, I'd shut the fuck up about it.

but this glorification is boosting google's sales. there are people discarding perfectly usable phones (as in lineageOS supported) and getting this fucking thing when the differences don't begin to touch their threat model in the slightest.

the "new OEM" with gOS was expected like the second coming. turns out, nothing changed. still gonna cost insane amounts of money. still the old, perfectly usable shit will be left behind.

You realize that it's possible to disagree with someone without being a dick about it, right?

I mean, I've certainly had my share of verbal dust-ups on Lemmy, but they always start off cordial instead of coming out swinging with the needless insults.

Exactly. Dell did it for years with some of their laptop models offering Linux.

It's not like a company can't do both on some devices so long as the sales support it.

it's hard to hide that kind of thing in open source software, and grapheneos is open source. I'm not sure this is a valid argument here
