Nah, new star trek doesn't feel classic enough because it's too netflixed out. Meaning it doesn't fit comfortable aesthetics, doesn't feel self-contained (stand alone episodes). Doesn't feel in-world, and isn't set in a likeable section of time in Star Trek lore.

Most people who don't like New Star Trek want a TNG, VOY, or DS9 era timeline, featuring a strong actress or actor as the Captain, that's episodic in nature, and operates as a philosophical defense/testing/statement about the best parts of western progressive/liberal democracy using sci fi as a metaphor or container.

Star Trek isn't a place for dark gritty season long arcs that feel like movies that aren't going anywhere. No, we want philosophical premises, in well lit carpeted spaces, about interesting technology, aliens, and psychology... That years later we realise were subtle commentaries (or even hopeful suggestions) about real world problems.

Lower Decks is currently the best fit for this.

DS9 had the arcs, darkness, and grit, and as such was not as liked at first, at least so I've heard. So maybe it will just take time for lower decks to be accepted.

I tried to like Discovery but it just seemed kind of wacky? Idk, I just vibed better with Star Trek Into Darkness

DS9 was bright and clearly shot compared to modern DISCO, and DS9 had an in-world explanation (being on a Cardassian space station).

Strange New Worlds is great for all of those reasons too. It's so much better than Picard or Discovery.

From what I understand, they misunderstood or deliberately misinterpreted "numetal" as simply "not real metal". And then coined the term "numale" as "not a Real Man[TM]".

And now, it's "NuTrek".

I get you, I feel what you mean, and I'd probably agree but personally I'm not really into TOS related stuff... I'm not even into ENT related stuff.

Prequels for a show that's trying to look forwards end up feeling like they're at crossed purposes for me.

I agree but that has nothing to do with the "Nu" pejorative assigned to Kelvinverse films.

The reactionary racists and trolls started reapplying the term to the Black Lady show and pretended that crying a lot is somehow the same thing as Captain Kirk riding a motorcycle through a flaming ring.

I think I said this before, but a problem is when someone says "I don't like star trek: discovery" it's impossible to know if they have reasons beyond "i don't like black women". They might not even know themselves! And if they do, they're unlikely to come out and say that. They'll reach for something more acceptable like "I wanted self contained episodes" (but DS9's arcs are cool) or whatever.

There are so many duds online they've poisoned the well of discourse.

The Federation rents carpeted spaces? I assume they're inner spaces, not outer, per se? That does make sense of certain episodes in the early years, the carpeting underlining the "shag where no man has shagged before" thing. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh. You meant "well-lit".

I like how they also implied that the space station was always really hot also since that's what Cardassians liked, if I remember correctly.

The first episode of DISCO put me on the path towards dislike. I thought we were going to get slightly more cinematic trek, with Michelle Yeoh's Character and Michael Burnham forming some sort of leadership team for mostly contained episodes... Perhaps with show long arcs (like VOY or DS9).

I had such hopes for that during the opening half of the episode. But I was left waiting for something that never showed up.

I'd love to see POC women taking their rightful place in ST leadership (because they so often have and do in progressive politics IRL). None the less to say what "get" as the root of Star Trek clearly isn't what the writers "get" as the root of New Trek.

I always thought it simply meant ‘new’, but purposefully misspelled. TIL.
