It's genuinely way more plausible that Kuwait friendly fired than Iran being capable of downing them.

Kuwait was getting hit, they shot down unannounced/unknown military jets.

They're F15s, the older tech, and the American pilots were probably taken completely by surprise by the Kuwaiti attack.
