this spells doom and gloom for the us empire and it makes me wonder how much the winds would change if the us empire got lucky with iran.

I don't think it would change anything in the grand scheme of things. The US would be stuck pouring resources into it the way they were with Iraq. And that would just be another drain on the empire. The core problem is that the cost of maintaining the empire outstrips the benefits at this point, and subjugating countries isn't cheap. Personally though, I just don't see how the US can subjugate Iran in the first place.
