I've seen employers do some crazy shit during hiring. Lining up a dozen people for interviews, passing over perfectly qualified applicants, then extending low-ball offers that nobody else wants to accept.

I was in a hiring group at a local software company that quite literally filled an auditorium with people for a standardized exam, then spend a full day doing exams and interviews, whittling down... I have to say somewhere north of eighty applicants to a field of four candidates. For a job that paid $25k/year starting (in 2006).

I got a rejection letter six weeks after I'd started a job at a boutique health care IT company that paid $32k/starting, after a ten minute phone call and a thirty minute in person interview.

Isn't that the strategy they use to justify outsourcing those roles to immigrants in need of an H 1B visa?

I didn't have a single interview like this. Every single one put the salary range up front.
