It might lead to us being able to get AI datacenter level GPUs to run our own models on for relatively cheaply as ewaste. Wouldn't that be cool?

Always the first thing to which a new technology is applied.

That won't happen. The chips themselves are useful for loads of industrial applications and the infrastructure itself is nontrivial.

Relatively cheap would still be tens of thousands of dollars.

As long as the hardware is cheap enough and gets into the right hands people will train and research to improve open models.

My hardware can go into your hands for free.

Very likely it will, Corporate AI and just corporate companies are prudish and restrictive, and Open source AI models don't have any such limitations, so yes AI generated pornography will improve with better access to hardware and big tech companies no longer stifling community AI models.

The hardware is generally extremely custom and licensed to high hell with specific locked firmware. It will be ewaste if the bubble crashes. You won't be running anything like this in your house and it's very unlikely the producers will take any steps to remove the locks on the hardware even if it were designed to be compatible with consumer grade utilities and infrastructure.

That's what they think and hope is going to happen. I'm hoping (and optimistic) consumers can stay furious and resourceful longer than they can stay solvent. Once the bigger bubbles start popping, that will almost certainly become true.

I'm just hoping for semiconductor prices to come down, but open source models getting better and having better hardware is a win in my book.

Well let's hope talented members of the community are able to write some custom drivers and crack the firmware. Wouldn't be the first time people have had to crack firmware to get obscure high end obsolete hardware working.

Edit: Okay I get it, you aren't posting this to clarify that this is a challenge for community usage, you're posting telling others not to bother.

If you think you can do it bro, but I've been in the industry long enough to know where this shit goes and it ain't to second hand use. You're ignoring so many aspects beyond just the firmware, I mentioned the infrastructure as well. A single Blackwell 2u draws 14.3Kw you're not installing that in your fuckin' home and that's before we get to the mandated dedicated water lines or the fact you're probably not cracking advanced firmware locks like that. It's frankly a ridiculous proposition that reeks of a lack of knowledge on the subject.

No one said it had to go in someone's home. Would it not be peossible if they were able to be acquired second hand, to find use by someone or someones that weren't the original buyer(s)?

Alright, sure buddy. You've got a 14.3Kw hookup (per 2U sever blade) and a glycol loop at your small business... These data centers operate at scales beyond the level of normal people or businesses. It'll end up ewaste or I'll eat my shoe, I've seen it time and time again with university super clusters and these are no different.

I don't really understand the hostility. I just asked you a question and rather than an explanation you answer with this and downvote. I guess that was my mistake for giving you the benefit of the doubt.

The hostility is that you're questioning my answer already without even bothering to do the most basic of research, it's frankly whiny and annoying. To answer you again though. No. It's not possible you're installing any of this hardware anywhere second hand. As I originally stated. Anything else is copeium.

Your behavior and tone in this thread has been incredibly hostile towards people simply for expressing ideas you didn't like or think was possible. If this is how you respond to people discussing these kinds of topics maybe you shouldn't participate in our communities.
