In the late 80's, there were plans for a Star Trek Academy film featuring John Cusack as Spock and Ethan Hawke as Kirk. The story behind its cancelation.

Cusack from Sixteen Candles and Hawke from White Fang with backdrop from Star Trek '09

Personal dream casting from that era: Ewan McGregor as Scotty, Emilio Estevez as Chekov, Tatyana Ali as Uhura, Brendan Fraser as Bones, Bob Saget as Sarek, Alicia Silverstone as Nurse Chapel, Ernie Reyes Jr. as Sulu, Jennifer Connelly as Una, and Jim Carrey as Pike (w/ Ace Ventura hair)

Look I'm not saying some part of me isn't interested in seeing what this would have looked like, but Undiscovered Country is one of my favorites so I'm glad we got that.

Of course, love it. Just rewatched it last night after learning this bit of trivia.

Imagine having an actually Scottish Scotty

Come on, late 80s? Gedde Watanabe as Sulu.

Sure, but I'm a sucker for TMNT II and Surf Ninjas.

Don't have to imagine it; SNW's Scotty, Martin Quinn, is Scottish.

That's fair, I just like to believe Sulu was a huge dork in school who only became suave and charming later.

And Khan as the paper delivery boy

you have ruined my late 80s by not getting this

My bad. Here's a consolation prize:

I don't remember that episode with Pike!
