Joseph Coors, a Colorado beer executive and longtime contributor to conservative causes, said that his concern about the "steady oppression" of the Nicaraguan Sandinista government caused him to approach William J. Casey, then the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, about helping the contras.

"Bill Casey was a good friend of mine," said Coors, the former chief operating officer of the Adolph Coors Co. Coors is also a friend and strong supporter of President Reagan.

Coors told the congressional Iran-contra panels that Casey directed him to Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, who convinced him to contribute $65,000 to purchase a Maule aircraft for the contras. Coors said he wired his donation to a Swiss bank account whose number was provided by North.

Coors has been a chief financial supporter of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, and also contributed to the Mountain States Legal Foundation, which James G. Watt headed before becoming Interior secretary.

"I had heard and talked with a good number of people in regard to the plight of the Nicaraguan freedom fighters . . . {and} I wanted to do something about that," Coors said yesterday.

Huh, so TIL Joseph Coors (who bankrolled Heritage Foundation to help lift it off the ground) also helped bankroll the Iran Contra scandal via the instructions given to him by his good friend Bill Casey...

The same Bill Casey, who has long been suspected of secretly working with Iran to delay the release of American hostages, in order to help Ronald Reagan defeat Jimmy Carter in 1980.

The Bill Casey who served in the precursor to the CIA, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during WWII as head of the European secret intelligence branch... The OSS that disregarded President Truman and decided they should go ahead and bring Nazi war criminals into the U.S. after WWII.

Although he officially sanctioned the operation, President Harry Truman forbade the agency from recruiting any Nazi members or active Nazi supporters. Nevertheless, officials within the JIOA and Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—the forerunner to the CIA—bypassed this directive by eliminating or whitewashing incriminating evidence of possible war crimes from the scientists’ records, believing their intelligence to be crucial to the country’s postwar efforts.

The same Bill Casey, who began his career as a business lawyer helping to conceptualize the idea of tax shelters, and explaining how businesses could do the bare minimum imposed on them by the regulations of the New Deal...
