Xaeg/Yay was the owner of LemmyNSFW, and he had access to and paid for the domain, server, and everything else related to the site. He has been AWOL for about 6 months now, and suddenly this month, the server and the domain stopped being paid for. I have no access to the server to get the database.

Because of this LemmyNSFW as it was, and all the content on it, much to my dismay, seems to have died.

So what now?

In my opinion, and I feel many other people's opinion as well, the fediverse needs a place for NSFW! A place run ethically while also allowing people to (within reason) explore their kinks, sexuality, etc. as they please.

So I have created FediNSFW to be that place! It is a piefed instance instead of a lemmy one because if there's one thing NSFW content benefits from it's good moderation tools and flairs, and piefed has those things.

As for now I have access to the DNS records to the lemmynsfw domain but there seems to be another dns setup that I don't have access to, in four months the ownership of the site will lapse, and I will try to aquire it so I have full control of it. Until then, I had no choice but to create this new site.

I am, as of now, the sole admin and owner of the site!

Now hosting is NOT free by any means, and I assume costs will rise, so I have created accounts on a few platforms so that people who would like to can donate.I plan to keep this site going as long as I can, and the more donations the site receives, the easier that will be!

I will NEVER ask anyone to pay to enter the site, this is purely voluntary.

The Future

I will slowly build out some of the formerly existing communities based on some snapshots of lemmynsfw from the wayback machine. But it would be much easier with the help of the community, so logically, I am looking for admins and mods!

• If you would like a community to be made and you're willing to check up on it and maybe make some posts here and there please make it! NOTE: for security reasons your account must be 24 hours old to create a community locally

• If you were a mod of a community message me and I will get that community created and add you as a mod!

• If you'd like to be an admin, obviously there will have to be some trust between you and I and you may need to be up to the task of potentially doing some sysadmin work. But message me on here or preferably on matrix if you're interested!

Do we have downvotes back yet? The algorithm fucking sucks without it.

Good one. Though I've been informed that people around here are not into "furry shit" (direct quote) so I think they'd have a meltdown if you tell them about scalies.

Didn’t lemmynsfw specifically have downvotes disabled because people didn’t know how to correctly it and were downvoting just because they didnt like something vs it not being relevant to the community? I know this was heavily impacting guys who were trying to post in forums that were valid for example.

I believe that was the rationale for disabling downvotes. Honestly, it was pretty nice. Really, only rule-breaking content should be downvoted in my opinion. But everyone just uses it as a "don't like" signal, which further marginalizes small/niche posters and communities that aren't breaking any rules, by suppressing their posts with negative ratios.

Making a post will not do much, you may want to disable it totally, or the very least have it disabled by default.

Rule breaking should be reported. Downvotes should indicate relevance or general disapproval. But that’s my opinion. Feel free to downvote. 😉

Yeah, my opinion is rule-breaking should be reported. I'll correct myself: The phrase I should have used is "bad-faith conduct." Sealioning, LLM-likely text, propaganda posts, troll comments. Things that may not break rules but still are outside the bounds of respectful or legitimate effort.

If people want to use it to express general disapproval, the result will be a reddit-like leveling of commentary and opinion, because the bell curve of opinion will keep narrowing to just the most statistically acceptable content.

But if you insist on using downvotes for just "disapproval," I'd at least suggest doing it asymmetrically: upvote if you liked a thing at all; downvote only if you absolutely hate it.

Idk, that's a piefed glitch, if you create an account your can get past it, sometimes you can get past it without an account, try the desktop version of the site it might let you past it, I'll mention it to the dev, several people are having issues, especially on mobile

Downvotes are a "I don't like this" signal that's the entire purpose. Of course it meant that guys posting got berried that's the whole point. That content was unpopular thus it got downvoted saving mW from having to see it. I don't care how valid ur post is if its not popular then its not popular that's how the marketplace of ideas works.
