A French soldier has died after he was shot in the head while taking part in a game with other soldiers during a party, according to local media.

Brigadier Alexandre Lanckbeen was critically injured during the incident last Saturday while attending a party involving alcohol at the Percy Military Teaching Hospital in Clamart, west of Paris.

According to French prosecutors, a loaded handgun was discharged during what was described as a game between the soldiers, and a bullet struck Lanckbeen in the head.

Real story time:

In 2016 or 2017 (can't really recall which one), I was on Vigipirate (you patrol public spaces in a small group) in Paris for about 3 months and we stayed in a big hospital that had been repurposed as military operational housing and we (the FFL) were sharing this hospital with other branches of the army. One night we heard a loud noise, something close to a rifle burst (3 rapid shots), and I was already in a cozier job as the captain's secretary so he called the Command Section of which I was part of and we got equipped and as a team went through our floor of the building checking what happened (I think other sections were counting their men and equipped but on standby), and then eventually met up with one of the other floors with other people and checked the rest of the building at our pace. Eventually, another group found out what took place (and they told us when we reached the basement and found them there): some young soldier from one of the other branches had killed himself with his own FAMAS (sometimes you had them on you because you were on Quick Reaction Force as was the case here). And lots of tears were shed the next day in the morning assembly, but work had to continue.
