I always thought that the more fucked the world got, the more people would join me in the 'Who fucking cares?' position on identity neuroses. It appears that won't happen, and we'll all just die, stuck in 2016, forever.
The problem is that on the economic question, most political parties offer little more than variations on the same neoliberal program, which slightly alter the rate at which conditions go to shit. Identitarian neuroses are the only real vote-getter that politicians have to offer. But see Mamdani as a master class in overcoming these identitarian neuroses by keeping his messaging focused on how exactly he would deliver for his consituents, both before and during his term as mayor.
