I feel like I need very few things to be happy. Books, a roof over my head, comfortable clothes, healthy food, fresh air, some place to do some exercise. I'm sure there are things that are missing -- community, maybe? -- perhaps because I take them for granted and don't even notice their effect on my general well-being, but still, isn't that really quite little? But then, I think of what that actually entails. Where does food come from? Where do I get the books? What if something breaks -- how do I get it fixed? In reality, there are many things I need. Even if I were to try to go off-grid; homestead; do everything myself, from scratch; I would end up needing tons of stuff. And if I don't do the stuff myself, someone needs to do them for me, which is really just having stuff by proxy! Things are necessary, quite unfortunately, aren't they? This frustrates me. It's not enough to just want or think about simplicity and minimising our needs, so we can thrive in the space left -- we need to materialise our needs, or at least the means by which to satisfy them. All this makes me think of a plan. Or rather, it makes me feel like I need to make a plan. Or rather rather, it makes me feel like my plan is incomplete and unambitious! Is it enough to just accumulate some money and retire? Perchance not. Maybe there's a better way, a more satisfying way: materialising or capturing the means by which to satisfy my needs, on my own terms. Well, I'm thinking about this, anyway. I wore my black trousers again, today. |
