Currently, it's only age attestation when creating a user account though, no verification in the sense of someone/something actually checking that the reported age is correct. |

Yeah. And the exact same thing the last 3 times this was implemented in systemd/some Linux distros. We've discussed this to death in multiple threads, with many people saying they probably should move to BSD. So I still think this is newsworthy solely because of that last point. |

Wait until people find out all unix-like systems can "verify" their email address, phone number, or even home address. |

Yes, very funny that these fields have existed for decades but no one knew about it, but suddenly everyone is freaking out because a birthday field has been added. Sure, let's just pretend that this is totally unrelated to the laws currently being made and implemented that require the operating system to provide user age to applications and websites for age restriction. After all, all those Gecos fields people have filled have been shared across the internet all those years, oh wait never mind, they didn't, and they aren't really being used at all. Seriously though, what's your point? Can't you see any difference here? |

Tomorrow, all OS have to collect user gender during installation. Not being used for anything, not being verified. But it’s there. What’s the big deal? /s |

Yes and no. I think the point is the intent here. If this had been introduced at a time where these laws were not being passed, no one would have bagged an eye - because in all likelihood the goal was different. Now that these laws are coming, suddenly the birthday/age field is being added left and right, which makes you wonder: why? There doesn't seem to be any other logical reason. Think of it like this: there's a central road in the city. On just about any given day you can walk along that road and nobody will bat an eye. But if you walk along that road on the day that there's some questionable protest, you may be walking the way you would normally walk, but you're still walking alongside that questionable protest. So people will rightly ask themselves: "why is he walking along there like that now?" |

It's even funnier, since they disallow usage of it if you are from California/Brazil:
So the mantainer was is a hurry to implement it for people in countries where it is not illegal to not ask said information. |

You don't even need to wonder the reason, the systemd mantainers cited these laws as they reason for the PR. |

Can make extended version, that zooms the next frame into the logo's cat and its implied impassive devious side eye |
