I posted about this a week ago:
It's now been implemented on the latest piefed. A Piefed user instance banned from anywhere will now be hard-banned from all communities on that instance to prevent them from being a local menace unbeknownst the moderators of those communities. But all Piefed instances need to update.

If you trust moderators this post might be written well. I for one note the lack of acknowledgement of the fact that moderators are often shitty little dictators and every other moderator backs up every other moderator, just as every government official backs up every government official in abusing their authority. It's partly why lemmy/piefed hasn't taken off, we need clear rules fairly enforced with an appeal system that ends in something like a Jury Trial of users to ascribe guilt. |

This change has nothing to do with community moderators or community moderator bans, but instance bans. And it's plugging a gap in how instance bans federate - preventing a banned user from an instance from vandalising a community on their local instance.
This is outside the scope of this particular change. I've no problem with the idea of a modchat system that incorporates this stuff and provide users with a place to appeal bans, but it would more-or-less need to be built from the ground-up. Although the idea of a 'jury trial' for bans would have to be an opt-in function. You can't make instances run their servers like that. |

Not defending anyone but if you’re so critical of the current moderators how about you become one and show us what a good moderator is like? |

Ah I see, I still want my ideal to be put out there, but understand the need to keep the tankies at bay, seeing as I have first hand knowledge of them, and that they are across lemmy, not just on hexrat and ml. Don't get me wrong they have a lot of cool users, but their leadership is very much not cool, and I suspect the long palsied arm of russian intelligence. |

Easy buddy, I'm expressing an ideal for a better system that could actually supplant silicon valley instead of being what we are. We can do better. And as a matter of fact, I do want to become a sort of, what do you call it, developer. |

Well this is less about 'the tankies' and more trolls who, when instance banned, will still sometimes spam up the communities on the instance they are banned from. It won't federate, but it would still appear locally - and the community mods wouldn't know about it - because previously, an instance ban didn't equate to hard community bans, it just stopped federating out. |

I agree with your strong principles! I've seen lots of moderation decisions on Lemmy I don't agree with. Not so many on Piefed, but stuff happens. If one of our gremlins gets banned from a remote instance for silly reasons and still wants to talk to us in their communities, I say let them. |

Just to be clear: basically, until now, instance ban was not an actual instance ban but "ban from the communities that person had in cache from my instance"? So if, for example, a new community was made, the person could just write there like not instance banned? |

They could, but the instance ban would prevent the comments and posts being federated. So it would only be visible locally on their instance. But that was still a problem. |
