AMD missed the mark with AI by ignoring the Nvidia ecosystem for so long. They're playing catch up.

As an analyst from my country proposes, depending on how the situation is dealt with, the next step would be a "stag-inflation", when inflation freezes for a while. Then, if the issue is left to grow, there are cases of deflation, but because people are in full contingency. And as manufactures lose notion of cost and demand, they stop producing as much, shrinking the already shrinking stocks, and making people go on a rush to stock up, resulting in hyper-inflation.

But I suspect this issue is just a cover up for the world's general impoverishment/inflation from the past few decades, AIs being an useful scapegoat.

This is all accurate but overlooks bullwhip effect and that applies to fuckin everything somehow at the same time as everyone nit realizing theyre doing it lol. Every supply shortage results in either people over ordering or oem's over producing demands. Its like natural law in my andecdotal experience. Half kidding but other half is super cereal.

I bought AMD specifically because they didn't prioritize AI the way Nvidia did.

The thing is, Nvidia doesn't care. They make way more money from the business sector. More and more businesses don't care about the average consumer, they care about the consumers with deep pockets.

I bought AMD products for Linux support, and even bought one share of their stock back in the 1st gen Ryzen days. I've stayed a customer and shareholder because I was happy that they weren't prioritizing AI. I'll be honest though lately some of their moves towards AI, and even that deal they made getting in on the OpenAI money circle bubble have left me questioning my continued support. Part of me wants to sell my share in protest, but I know that won't even be noticed. Another part of me wants to sell my share because it'll probably lose value when the bubble pops, but even if it went to zero I'd only be out around $30, and at this point, profiting even a couple hundred bucks off the AI bubble feels like taking blood money.

Consumer hardware has always been an R&D recoup for the business sector.

I got an Nvidia when I got my dream machine last time (paid a shitload of money, but it was half what it would be if I got it now). Since I value my current machine very much and the computer field seems to be stagnating, I will just maintain my current machine. The last failure was due to a dying power supply (which can be replaced) and a dying hard drive.

If I wanted to add a 2nd GPU to my computer, it is going to be an AMD. I had AMDs before and they were fine.

Yeah, but AMD and Nvidia's consumer GPUs don't exist in a vacuum. They are companies with entire portfolios of things to sell. I know people are frustrated and maybe it helps them to downvote, but it's the truth. Nvidia doesn't give a shit about the consumer market now (neither does Samsung, Crucial, etc...). AMD doesn't have the leverage to squeeze the market like Nvidia does, hence the price drop referenced in the article while the price of a 5090 is still going up. I don't know why any gamer would buy Nvidia though. Unless you want to do AI workloads, they've priced themselves out of being reasonable. Heck, even for AI, AMD gives more RAM at a lower cost and ROCM continually gets better.

At this point in my life I've learned to just play the game. I hate the rule makers and want the rules changed, but you only hurt yourself if you don't play.

What, the original comment in this thread is about the comment about AI? Nobody in this comment thread said anything about Linux support other than you just now. You're lost in the thread.

Think of it as scamming an AI bro out of a couple hundred bucks.

I went AMD because I don't like poor connector design.

If footballs become too expensive I'll cut off a few branches and use a small stone for a puck. Who needs football when it is ripping you off? That's why it'll never get too out of hand. The football industry doesn't want to destroy itself.
