For those not too well-versed in Indian idpol, interfaith, intercaste, and sometimes interethnic marriage are strongly discouraged by social conservatives (80% of society) out of fear that it will dilute the standing of the parents’ community, and that of the parents within the community. The proposed rule, requiring parental notification of marriage, serves to put a spotlight on such relationships, giving parents who disapprove the opportunity to restore their family “honor” by involving violent religious nutcases (dime a dozen in India) to “persuade” the couple against going ahead. Pretty much a textbook case of anarcho-tyranny in service of reactionary social structures that may be uncomfortable to deal with now, but only harm the country in the long run through the internal divisions they create.
