This short used to be a part of Three Stories about Food - the original version of what became In The Mood For Love.

But then during the production - the ITMFL segment got bigger and bigger and eventually Kar-Wai decided to wholly focus on it instead and the other segments were abandoned.

However, the first segment was mostly shot so it was edited into a short movie of its own titled ITMFL 2001. The plot is similar to Chungking Express/Fallen Angels - Tony Leung runs a store, Maggie Cheung is one of the customers. Both longing for love.

Eventually, Kar-Wai remodeled the story into My Blueberry Nights. What you see in the film strips is the original version of the cake kiss scene.

Been a while since I saw one of his films. I really liked them, but he also totally ruined "California Dreaming" for me, lol.

Oh well, it's always something. But I'm cool with it being replaced in my M's & P's rotation with "This is Dedicated," an even better song IMO.
