And what happens once that inevitably fails? It seems that the two outcomes are that the US continues to escalate until nukes are used or the US admits defeat. And I just can't see how the latter happens.

There have been some milquetoast noises at best. Just compare to what western leaders and media said about Russia after the war in Ukraine started. Where's the same condemnation of the US, where are official statements from western leaders unequivocally condemning violation of sovereignty, unprovoked aggression, and full scale invasion of Iran?
