Doesn't this also reflect back on us? We think of us as highly flexible to environmental change, hell, we initiate the change by ourselves on very large scales ((societally) coordinated land use changes, colonisation & renaturation, et cetera), but AFAIK our bodies are not too different from when our environment was very different.
