EVs are cool but I don't trust the CCP a single fucking iota so I'm worried these are gonna be obsoleted, irreparable, remotw shutoff, spying on people, all kinds of wacky shit.

While I agree, fuel can be somewhat shut off too. Twice in the last week my local has been out of diesel. I feel China is so effectively taking over with cheap ev's that they won't need to use nefarious avenues, they're gonna crush the market.

At this point I trust them more than the US.

I don't like the word "effective" used to describe heavy subsidies, to corner markets, fueled by rampant slave labour and extreme poverty wages.

In every way that the USA is bad, China is worse.

I do wish there was a company selling "dumb" EVs. No cellular, no OTA updates, no cameras and so on. Just battery, motor, motor controller and auxiliaries. Like a cheap car from 2005. A DIY conversion is the only way to achieve this as far as I know.

There definitely are a couple, such as SLATE.

Another one I'm excited about is Edison Motors. The guy started the company because he got really pissed off about all the recent changes away from standardized parts and towards individual model parts.
