That's the veneer theory, and as I understand it it's been proven to be wrong time and again.

If I remember correctly, Humankind by Rutger Bregman addresses this pretty directly.

Surely not an actual science "theory," but at best a soft-science hypothesis that can't ever be definitely proven, one way or the other.

It's just a thought experiment AFAIK.
