Also what are some things that tempted you to look for alternatives? |

I have used Ubuntu in the past for about six months, on an old laptop while I was building, well buying and obtaining parts for my PC. While I do consider returning to Linux, possibly using another distro, there are some things I experienced that I do not wish to deal on daily basis.. Occasionally would be fine.
At this time, what I want from my PC is to work at least 66% of the time. If I want to quickly check something online, I want to be able to do it without fighting for three hours. If I want to just quickly play some games, I want to be able to do it without fighting for another three hours. I know I'm spoiled and demanding for too much. |

I'd like to interject for a moment. |

I'd like to interject for a moment. While Linux can be indeed complex as a daily driver, Ubuntu is a specifically problematic distro. If you still consider using Linux, I would recommend trying Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, but is more stable and doesn't have snaps at all, only flatpak. Fedora also deserves to be mentioned, it has Atomic Desktop editions with important system components...
I have been thinking of booting up the old laptop and injecting it with Mint, just gotta get around to that. I want to try it out and learn a bit before possibly ruining my main PC, or once I build the planned next PC. I checked a while ago and I shouldn't be needing any applications without alternatives. (I was struggling a bit while looking for a music player, MP3, but Strawberry should be fine I guess.) I do play some games that don't seem to be Linux compatible (Steams's words) but then again, I game so rarely and there are plenty of games that work so ehh, not a dealbreaker. (Also there seems to be all kinds of software to get around this so I could also just work to get the games to work..) Thank you for your answer and Mint Cinnamon recommendation, I will look into it once I get around. :) |

A lot of games are compatible through a program called wine, but you usually need some amount of skill in order to use it. Also consider Proton, it's originally a program from SteamOS, an official Linux distro made by Valve. Games using kernel level anticheat are almost never compatible even through wine and proton. I'm not into gaming though, that's just what I've heard. There is a music player called Astra, it is currently in beta, but it seems to be worth trying out. For sure you should try installing Linux to a non-main PC, that's what I've done too. |

Thank you! :) I will look into these. Luckily don't need to worry about anti-cheat, I prefer to play alone my lil pixel games. |
