The tickets are listed on FIFA's official resale platform but the World Cup organiser does not control the prices.

Woah I thought that was the price of every ticket inside the whole arena. Like the total gate.

I’m not entirely certain how convinced I am FIFA was entirely ignorant of the decision to list them at this price, given that it’s generating headlines, reframing prices for interested buyers, and they stand to take a hefty cut:

FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, does not control the price of tickets listed for resale — which is legal under U.S. and Canadian law — but takes a 15 per cent cut from both buyer and seller, which is included in the overall price. FIFA would, in theory, therefore pocket $600,000 if just one of the four tickets is sold.

$2,200,000 across a 60k stadium chalks out to a very reasonable $36 ticket, so I could see where you’d think this non-profit might choose such a price point.

Didn't realize from the headline it was a 60k stadium. I would have guessed a 20k stadium (more common size), and thus a healthy $100+ per ticket. Would have been a perfectly normal total gate for a venue like that.

While 20k venues are more common for soccer-specific stadiums in the US, FIFA only really considers mixed-use stadia with much larger capacities for the World Cup. You’d see friendlies or the Gold Cup in those smaller venues.
