Recently, I've been considering an extreme career pivot.

A buddy of mine went into a sort of interesting field, and I'm thinking of following suit. I'm not sure if I have a chance of getting in, but if I do, I'll do it.

I'm so tired of the garbage that is engineering... Frankly. It's so frustrating. I don't even know anymore.... I kind of feel like so much of my life has been horribly misguided.

Anyway, I wore jeans today.

Well yes... don't mean to presume you're a software engineer, but if you are a lot of the careers on offer in the field are either pointless or destructive. I suppose of the two, it's better to lean into the former to make a living.

I can cope by disassociating myself from work and focus on things that matter to me, but then when I'm reminded or it gets used as primary identity, say when I get introduced along with my profession to someone, I have a strong desire to disavow my industry and position. Which is probably not the healthiest since I'm not manufacturing weapons or anything directly destructive, but there's just a deep personal shame from the web of associations I have with technology these days.

So yeah: maybe an interesting field is a lifeline if things feel less misguided and interesting, even if it's a just shade off from horribly misguided. In any case, good luck!

Yeah, I'm not a software engineer, I'm a biomedical engineer.

Sucks to hear, though, that you also have a bit of a strained relationship with your field (let's put it like that). I do understand, though.

Thanks!
