We’re not in World War 3. So the only way to refer to Canada’s present situation is “Not World War 3”.

There are two general camps in “Not World War 3”. One camp believes showing loyalty to the US will pay off - and this camp hopes that this will prove true enough for others to justify the hassle of trying to pretend the world is not dragged into a state of conflict, and maintain the old ways of doing business with the US. For Canada, I’d suggest that this camp would typically be personified in Poilievre. A second camp, where I’m writing from, believes there are enough signs to suggest that the US has entered a new phase in its history, one that poses many dangers to Canada.

In this phase, the US has lived long enough to become the villain of its own stories, and has joined Israel in a Neo-Axis. As Israel continues to attack and occupy Gaza and Lebanon, the tragedies and the war crimes continue to mount. For most observers of Israel’s actions, the genocide and displacement of Palestinians, and now Lebanon, are essentially part of an expansion and annexation of surrounding territories. And, what I find most disconcerting: Israel’s Anschluss.

Anschluss is a specific reference to Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria as part of Hitler’s expansionist agenda to unite German speaking peoples. While no one would suggest that the sequence of events is a match, the underlying objectives and mechanics are the same. In the case of Israel, the country carries out a campaign of bombing and displacement to permanently take new territories for settlement.

US allies are not seeing the execution of some kind of 4D real strategy for global commerce or peace. Rather, we are witnessing the depravity of US decision makers as they choose to lavish themselves in personal comforts while they literally set billions - if not trillions of dollars of economic activity on fire. And, while they do this, Americans are essentially forcing its traditional allies into a war footing without announcing a war, trying to profit from the chaos at everyone’s expense.

Does the World have any expectation that the US can charge course? No. As of this writing, Trump’s America has entered a period of corruption and decadence for its power classes, and has probably triggered demand destruction for the oil and gas sector as the world transitions to renewable energy. With Not World War 3 continuing, Canadians have to take stock the scale of the conflicts. The US engaged its domestic population with the use of their Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE], resulting in political violence and intimidation. The US also engaged in regime change in Venezuela, threatened other South American countries with similar actions, and supplies intelligence and military hardware to Israel.

In terms of the US and Iran conflict in Not World War 3, there’s no relief in sight for the ASEAN members who are most impacted by the shortages of gas and diesel required to keep their economies moving. If Trump persists with Not World War 3, experts have anticipated the destruction of energy infrastructure of the GCC countries, along with civilian infrastructure like desalination plants.

The World has also learned more about how modern economies have become dependent on the Middle East for so many energy and chemical products. While much is said about Oil and Gas, there’s also sulfur, which is an essential chemical that can be transformed into sulphuric acid, a holy grail ingredient used to produce batteries, fertilizers, and other compounds.

With modern life and all of its conveniences in the balance, instead of careful planning to stabilize the war, what the world sees is the degradation of the Rule of Law in the US. US markets show traders executing transactions that are remarkably well timed, suggesting people are trading with insider information.

In the midst of potentially rampant corruption, US President Trump made a historic budget request of $1.5 Trillion from Congress to further support the war. Another signal that corruption and profiteering is top of mind for the Americans.

You see, September 2025 was a remarkable month for the US Military, under the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth. Essentially the US broke records for military spending: $93 Billion dollars. Some of the listed purchases include a piano, Apple products, Alaskan king crab, lobster tail, ribeye steak, ice cream machines, doughnuts, recliners, fruit baskets, and more.

Without tangible military objectives for the war in Iran, the conflict is simply designed to siphon American money into an endless pit. In the midst of this chaotic aimlessness of the Americans, the US has participated in Israel’s Anschluss - not in terms of deliberate policy, but in spirit.

But, the World is coming alive to this, and so are the Americans. As US Brigadier General Steve Anderson opined, “‘I’m old enough to remember the Nuremberg trials and how we’ve held the Germans accountable after… the atrocities they committed during World War II,’ Brigadier General Steve Anderson told CNN Tuesday.

‘And I’d hate to think… five, 10 years from now, we’d be doing the same kind of thing with American soldiers and leaders that made decisions that were being directed by the president of the United States that are illegal.’”

With the stakes so high, Canada must not accept that the Americans will one day magically return to becoming a reliable partner in global trade. Canada is also under attack from propaganda, with dark money and dark patterns in favour of the Americans. We have to join the world to defuse the Neo-Axis. The Americans have to return back to their own self-interest on their own, and they can do that by stepping away from the Israeli Anschluss.
