Does Inconvenience Justify Death?

Yesterday, I killed a moth.

Why? Well, for no reason, I suppose. It was flying around and annoying me. Actually, at the particular moment of its death by my hand, it wasn't even flying. It had stopped and landed on a tile, where I smooshed it with a slipper.

There are a lot of things that I kill every day, and most of them go completely unnoticed. Ants that I step on, bacteria my body takes out without me being conscious, snails. I hate the feeling of stepping on a snail, so I avoid doing it as much as possible, but sometimes I just don't notice! And so, I kill them. Frankly, I don't think that's bad. I do feel a little bad about it; I have a deep appreciation for life, so crushing a life beneath my feet (literally, at that) does upset me, but I don't think it's bad. So that I may live, others must die. It is as simple as that. As I'm not in the business of utilitarianism, wishing to justify my own death, but rather simply steeped in appreciation for what is and has been alive, I find that my life does justify the death that it necessitates.

However, I didn't need to kill that moth. It might've slightly inconvenienced me, sure, but that's it. It didn't hurt me, it barely even annoyed me to be quite frank! Yet, I killed it. Nonchalantly, too, without batting an eye; only upon reflection does the act upset me.

I don't think inconvenience justifies death. I think these little bugs should be allowed to live and thrive, as long as they're not harming me. If they're being an inconvenience, I might move them or try to guide them away from me, but killing them is overkill (pun intended).

It might seem odd to fret over such inconsequential life as a single moth, but I feel that it matters. It matters by its very nature, regardless of how long it would be alive, how long it had been alive, and what it had done or would yet do. All that is irrelevant, I find. It was alive, and hence, since I had no need to, I shouldn't have killed it. It's as simple as that.

I guess all I can do is try to be better, next time.

I wore my black suit trousers, today. It was nice! But my shirt was way too hot... Unfortunately. I'll wear a polo tomorrow, probably, since it's just so hot these days.

Also, my new suit is taking its sweet time arriving... Annoying.
