TL;DR Khentrul Rinpoche says its clear psychedelics help some people at some times. For spiritual awakening, we need faith, love, things like that most of all. And we need to be challenged (if I'm understanding him right). The use of psychedelics and sex on the path can help, but can harm the path. Using sex on the path is not as dangerous as using drugs. You shouldn't use them as a lazy shortcut to avoid meditation.

This is in line with my understanding of the 5th precept. "A layman who has chosen to practice this Dhamma should not indulge in the drinking of intoxicants. He should not drink them nor encourage others to do so; realizing that it leads to madness. Through intoxication foolish people perform evil deeds and cause other heedless people to do likewise. He should avoid intoxication, this occasion for demerit, which stupefies the mind, and is the pleasure of foolish people." – I think this leaves the door open to the use of substances in a way that does not leads to heedlessness and foolishness.

A lot of people have spiritual experiences when they use. There are some people that get into Buddhism because of it. They don't really go to far into Buddhism because it's a lot more work that taking a few pills. I tried it once, and I thought a lot about the cycle of life, and thinking about death is a good thing in Buddhism. In the end it's a pill or tab or whatever, and you can have spiritual thoughts, but I don't really put much stock in people who got into Buddhism because of a pill.
