I’m a worker in NC and just learned how little protection we actually have with our retirement accounts. ERISA laws from 1974 basically shield big retirement companies from consequences when they screw up. Under ERISA, workers can’t sue for punitive damages, emotional distress, or use state consumer‑protection laws. You can’t get a jury trial. And even if the company gives you wrong info, the most you can win is the money you were already owed. If any other financial company did this outside an ERISA plan, you’d have real legal options. Inside a retirement plan, you lose almost all of them.

I started a petition to push for ERISA reform so workers can actually hold these companies accountable. If this affects you or someone you know, consider signing or sharing.

Any average day person could sue a mom and pop restaurant into bankruptcy. But the largest Financial companies in the world maintain stronger protection to mitigate liability for their mistakes.
