In the mid-aughts I worked for a big state-wide grocery chain in WI that was bought out by an investment company who was always looking for ways to save a dime…or nickel, in this case. We started selling our branded reusable bags and when anyone used a bag (even reused paper bags from home) we gave them 5¢ off, up to 25¢ total. After a while, we got notice from HQ that we were only supposed to start giving the discount if they used one of *our* branded reusable bags. Even the corporate bootlickers knew this would fall apart quickly and had pre-printed small sheets of paper with the corporate contact info when customers would bring up how ridiculous it was. “Why did I only get 10¢ off? I have five bags.” “Yes, but only two are our branded bags.” *hand them the slip of paper with corporate contact info* “Why didn’t I get my bag discount?” “We can only give the discount if you use our own bags, not anyone else’s”. *hand them the slip of paper with corporate contact info*. It took about two weeks before they switched it back to how it was before.
