I've seen quite a few terms and phrases used to describe autism, like "neuro-spicey" and "'tism". I want to know what your opinions on terms like these are. (Also, if you can think of more examples of words like this, please comment them!)

Please give your genuine, honest opinion on this. My opinion (below) is not very positive, but I really, genuinely want to hear others opinions, even if they differ from mine! I also want to hear from people all across the spectrum, not just those with low support needs.

I personally find terms like the ones above to be very demeaning, infantilizing, and honestly offensive. I mostly feel like this when neurotypicals use these terms, but I also really don't like it when autistic people talk about others (who aren't confirmed to be autistic) like "yeah, he's definitely got a little touch of the 'tism" (rough quote from someone in my life). I just don't think we should be diagnosing others like that, especially with that type of language. Autism is so multifaceted and can overlap with many disorders, it just doesn't make sense to give that label to someone else, especially when used in a "quirky", "silly" way.

I feel like words like these simplify my condition so it's easier to digest for others. But in simplifying it, my very real struggles are not acknowledged. It feels almost like people are saying "we will accept your disability only if your condition can be seen as something quirky and goofy". These terms make me feel like my existence / struggles / disability are being romanticized.

To be very clear, these are just my opinions, and they don't invalidate your own opinions / experiences!!

I feel like that wasn't entirely coherent, but I gave it my best shot! If you're confused at all, please, please let me know because I'm happy to explain :3
