Smash Mouth wound up getting overplayed with "All Star", but their debut Fush Yu Mang is excellent. Way better than you'd expect, and it's worth a listen if just for their first radio hit, "Walkin On The Sun".

TBh I loved Astro Lounge (the album that All Star is on). The rest of the album is quite good despite the wearing out of its most famous track.

Anthrax has some really great stuff. But as you said, you have too tread carefully through their catalog. When they are good, they are amazing... When they are bad, they are really bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlLn0UicWrM

Peak Anthrax

Imagine Dragons. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is: They picked up hate for being marketed like they're some kind of super hard rock, even though they're not. But their music is good for the genre it is. The lead singer was raised Mormon, but is now an activist for LGBT youth.

I've got to disagree with this one. Imagine Dragons was synthesized in a lab to be as corporate sounding as possible. The lead singer especially is grating. It's exactly the singing style that Ai would come up with. That's not a random comment, I know because old people show me shitty Ai songs on a regular basis and they sound like Imagine Dragons.

Probably Nickelback. I'm no fan, but they seem to get the most hate of anyone just for being mediocre.

It's really more the generation that came up thinking Nickleback (and post grunge bands in general) was peak hard rock/grunge/punk or even edgy that's to blame. Nickelback themselves are fine, there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to have a wide audience for your pop rock band but some semblance of hardness in your sound.

For me it's "Photograph." Such an aggressively sappy and mediocre song. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of an essay I would have written on the bus on the way to school in 6th grade. I kind of like "Never Again", it's a bit heavy-handed but it's got crunchy guitar and the message is good, don't put up with abusive shit.

That's why I like it, it's funny to me. Even funnier after the memes like look at this graph

I've met so many people who hate Meatloaf. I think Bat out of Hell is a top 10 album.

I don't hate it, I just don't get it. Rock boomers always ranked it pretty high. The album art looks like the most killer metal album ever. And then I drop the needle for the first time and it's fuckin' showtunes.

I'm sure "most hated" has already been covered, so I'll go farther down the list and pick one that's a little hated and IMHO more than "not bad": Crash Test Dummies. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm gets clowned on by people who remember it, but (1) it's pretty good, and (2) CTD's first three albums are full of super catchy folk-pop-rock with decent lyrics. Some of the third album, and then subsequent stuff get...

I didn't realize they were hated

Ghost comes to mind. I’ve never had a problem with them and a lot of their songs I think are pretty good. Seems like they get shit on a lot though.

This is because they seem like they would be a metal band but are not. Ghost doesn't claim that but some fans do from time to time and it never fails to rage bait metal fans.

At least in the thrash scene, Anthrax gets shit on a lot for being part of the Big 4, however I fucking love them, even though they had a period where every release was dogshit. Their early stuff is peak thrash, which is good because nowadays they mainly stick to playing their early stuff. Still deserving of their position. Though sometimes I wonder if it should be a Big 5, including Exodus, wh...

Comedy Central destroyed Nickleback. There was a comedy special or show, I don't remember. Anyway, they promoted the show with a clip from a stand-up bit that was at Nickleback's expense. I you watched The Daily Show, or South Park, you would have seen that ad a hundred times. After that, liking Nickleback was an embarrassment. What follows is my bad recollection of the joke. People say that mu...

I remember that, and this is accurate. Thing is, Brian Poesehn is famously a hard core heavy metal fan, and seems to judgementally hate anything but what he personally likes, so Nickelback got taken down by a guy with questionable taste.

Foo Fighters, for some reason, are fucking loved, and yet if you actually listen to their albums, they're just... meh

they got a few good songs and a lot of things I never want to hear again. and that's coming from someone whose favourite band was them for a very long time. not to mention they sound like shit live

Since people are fairly familiar with Western artists, I'd like to mention Orange Range, an Okinawan Rock/Hop Hop band that was huge in the 2000s in Japan.

Some of you might know them because they did a bunch of anime/drama OPs, ads, and even did the official World Cup support song for team Japan (a huuuuge feat for a bunch of kids from Okinawa), but they were joking around how they still music from famous artists during an interview, and the haters just chewed them up. I personally like their music and their "stealing," is more like "parodying," imo.

That makes sense, because the music is repurposed from a musical that Meat and Steinman were writing.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica is I think the most hated metal musician today, with the Napster case and his recent performances which are way too snare-heavy if you ask me (some would use the word "lazy").

But the large majority of the metal scene acts as if he was the worst drummer ever, which is obviously not the case. If you go and listen to Metallica's 80s and early 90s stuff, including bootlegs of live performances, this drummer is more than capable, but he also invented a lot of fills and patterns that came to be used prominently by others, like Mike Portnoy.

So I'm not saying this in defense of the guy - don't know him personally - but that's a blatant case of people not listening with their ears if you ask me...

I saw them at the Fillmore in mid 1999. They were great live.

But what really knocked me out was half way through the second set the singer (sorry don't remember his name) walked up to the mic and said "this song has been in our heads all week and now we're gonna put it in yours."

...And proceeded to play a flawless cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time. The lead singer even did some of Brittny's moves from the video.

Wasn't her whole vibe on that first album being like a neo-Kennedy that's depressed? Talking about being successful with a house in the Hamptons is like thr opposite of saying she came up poor.

The Beatles are alright.

They just sound boring to younger people because they were so influential, their work got incorporated into all of pop music.

I don't personally hate them but my college roommate did because he thought they were boring.

When I heard him talk about his relationship with Carl Sagan and how he was one of the very few people that were willing to invest time and energy in him as a black man in STEM at the time he made a little more sense to me. I feel like having to fight for it has probably made him a lil crispy around the edges.

Even if you don't grasp the context of the times, it's insane to call them "boring" unless they never listened past "A Hard Days Night" or "Help!"

That album definitely doesn't get enough credit. It's got some surprisingly heavy-hitting songs. Nervous in the Alley? The Fonz? Let's Rock?

It's crazy to me how many commercials used Walking on the Sun for the "So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out" line, considering the broader context of the song.

I was definitely too young to understand most of those songs as a kid.

I soured on it pretty quick only due to the ubiquity of "All Star", but I really should revisit that album. Even that song isn't bad, it just got played to death.

Reminds me of when Bob Dylan was young and starting out, he was invited to a DJs house that had a bunch of hard to find albums and stole them, which basically shaped his taste in music.

Look I am not a fan of hers so I don't recall much... which is why I worded my post with question marks.

Having said that, I remember some lyrics of her talking about growing up drinking Pabst's Blue and such.

Personally, I think artists can have artistic personas that do not have anything to do with their real personas, as long as they are clear about that. I never thought anything about her songs but remember reading about her receiving backlash from this.

I just did a quick search and there are a few of these (8 year old, my god time goes by)
