Have you read what Graphene Phone stands for? What their goal is?

Apparently not. Only been using it for 3 years.

If I only keep unimportant stuff on the sd card, can you explain what the problem is?

Does anyone know if it has a headphone jack? It seems dumb to brag about having B&O work on the audio if not, but I am still thinking it won't which will kill any interest in it. Edit: I confirmed it does not have one. total junk

Have you tried a USB C to headphone adapter? They're quite small and never have to leave your headphones. And you could set the phone on a wireless charger to charge and listen simultaneously. Would that be an option for you?

Oh. I see someone else asked this. Never mind.

ik it's subjective but the phone's design looks really bad. can't afford it anyway but.. gsmarena

Personally, I think it's better than the Samsung Galaxy Ultra series because, on those phones, the camera island goes down the phone, not across it, making magnetic accessories cumbersome to fit on at times.

The Motorola also looks like it doesn't have a camera island, just protruding cameras. I can't be sure though.

My major issues with it is that it's the first phone to officially support Graphene, so you'd think it would cater to a different demographic. Yet there's no headphone jack, no SD card support. And it's WAY too big. It's just another boring modern phone that is selling itself on being unnecessarily powerful.

My phone was unnecessarily powerful for me until /e/OS added local offline speech transcription.

Not a big market

I think people going for this hardware + OS are more of a function over form crowd.

Not me - I'm on Graphene but one of the biggest things I love about the software itself is that it's very well designed, which is rare to see in the FOSS / privacy community. I hate shitty UIs and shitty design in general.

I have had a sandisk microSD in my last 2 phones for 7 years in total and my girlfriend has had hers for 8.

Absolutely no problems with the SD cards (besides Spotify being a piece of shit app)

oh boy, i'm soo looking forward to a phone that runs any android version except the google-infested default android. while also not breaking 1000 compatibilities to specific functionalities. or having gross security vulnerabilities.

That already exists? Install GrapheneOS on any recent Pixel Phone.

The only thing I'm aware of in years of using it are Apps requiring full Play Integrity, because Google quite deliberate chooses not to allow this for GrapheneOS, despite all requirements being met. I'm not convinced they'll make an exception for a competitor's phone running the same.

for me personally, repairability is a negative on portable computers. the reasons are security, size, cost, regular lifetime. these are all negatively correlated to repairability. if you can screw your device open, that means that so can an attacker. it makes the phone bulkier and less efficient IMO if they have to keep in mind that every connector on the inside has to be standards-compatible.

Do you think an attacker that would physically access your phone to physically probe internal debug pads would not own a heat gun or care if the screen gets damaged during disassembly? πŸ˜‚ it is quite trivial to open.

They aren't giving the phone back. If it is such a targeted attack that the attacker is willing to open the phone at all, they will just fully disassemble it, it doesn't matter if it is repairable or not

It is bulkier, true, and harder to waterproof, but those are essentially the only 2 downsides.

Security shouldn't even be a consideration unless you are in the 0.00000001% of people doing professional spy or espionage work (or a target of them) that someone would be willing to go through the very elaborate operation of disassembling a phone to exploit firmware bugs to insert malware in order to put it back together into a compromised surveillance device and then slip it back into a location where you would just think you forgot to take it. In that case you should be using burner phones anyways, provided by the employer with a security team behind them.

A phone repair shop could pop in a new battery. It wouldn't be secure to use on the internet, but it'd be a good mp3 player :)

Due to not being able to get a graphene compatible phone with a headphone jack, I've been just using a DAP for the past year or so. It sucks needing to carry around a second device. If I hadn't already gone this route it would have been an option and I could have just used a rom that let me switch off the radios.

You're not going to get what you want here. Its abandoned tech. Not saying its better or worse, but they're not going to add them back in. They dont want ungrounded analog devices plugging into their digital devices.

You're abandoned in this forum.

They already have a DAC since they have speakers. If s USB DAC can be safe then an internal one can safely be connected to analog outputs too. It's just a connector.

Graphene picked an OEM who were willing to work with them and a device with the right CPU to support the hardware security features.

This was what was available.

That's because "make it affordable" is also an implicit ask with any sort of alike economy. And these companies are failing at hearing it.

The adapter is extra room and gives a joint point that can be bent and broken.

Built-in > Bolt-in.

Right. Much easier to replace an adapter than a built in 3.5mm jack.

When it comes to phone size that is not a main issue for me. The problem is UI that forces me to tap the top left corner to go back.

I read it. I found it increasingly confusing. I thought I was being very clear in making a singular point: engineers rarely if ever decide what features get built, unless their input on what's cost effective or possible is properly considered. In this case meaning engineers saying they want or don't want a headphone jack on a phone would probably not be a thing because they know if it did they would be ignored. Here's how this actually went:

Execs at company ask some team to find a new way to make revenue. They come up with the idea to remove the headphone jack and start making and selling wireless headphones and (bonus) adapters for people who don't want wireless. The CEO loves the idea and forces it to happen. The engineers were told to design a new phone without it. Some of them gripe about it but no one cares. Maybe even one guy quit over it. The phone gets made anyway because engineers don't decide features. They decide the how not the what.

Almost nothing is absolute. But you again seem to forget how this started. You told someone:

Apparently the majority of those people you are referring to arent phone engineers because they're not building them in.

Which is implying that engineers decide what features a phone has. There might be 1 in 100 that does because they were a founding member of the company or something, but you were very clearly generalizing the engineering role incorrectly. Then you doubled down several times then finally tried to play it off like you understood this the whole time and I was just being "nitpicky" so we're even or something.

Much harder to replace the built-in USB-C port and you also lose a lot of other features of the phone (such as... ya know... charging) in the meanwhile.

Really, AI has brought people intellects that low, even here on Lemmy?

Phone manufacturing companies from the CEO level all the way to the phone designers/engineers arent putting 3.5mm jacks in those devices. They dont want them.

I mean I'm sure they exist, but I haven't connected the thing to a PC to update it since I got it. I think I had to do it once. There's an app, but it's totally optional so I don't use it. I'm probably way behind on firmware updates if I'm being honest.

But it's a cannabis vaporizer. As long as it's doing the thing it's meant to do, I see no need to change anything.

Oh i see. Sorry. What I meant by "end of life" was when a manufacturer stops pushing software updates to it, either because they are no longer want to allocate an employee to take care of it, or they've decided its not possible to secure it anymore. For phones, that usually occurs after 3-7 years, depending on the manufacturer.

How often you needed to replace 3.5mm female socket? I don't think I ever encountered that (if there were issues it was always with the cable), but had to replace USB female socket several times.

Oh yeah, I dunno if they're still supporting it in that way. I'm pretty sure they've released a new version of the product within the last few years so they might have stopped putting out firmware updates for the one I have. No idea honestly.

It's not hyperbole at all. The Trump Phone (the literal Epstein Class phone) is 32% cheaper than the new Moto.
