One day, there were no more worlds to conquer. Humanity have reached the pinnacle of civilization. All desease was wiped out. Hunger was no longer a concern. Bigotry and hate were a thing of the past. Nobody had to work anymore, since all jobs that were required for humanity's survival were delegated to autonomous robots. There were still enough people who wanted to learn and create that arts and sciences could go on undisturbed, enriching humanity. As an average cutizen, you had nothing to worry about. There was no war, no strife, no danger, no scarcity. One day, a man by the name of John 316 B (one of two twins) had a fleeting thought. "What else is there to do?" John asked himself as he stared out of his window. "We have conquered all adversities. Conquered nature itself. Is this just the retirement of the human race? Had we really done everything there was to be done?" John scratched his chin, looking for something, anything that was yet to be done. He thought and thought. Considered every possibility. And the only thing he could come up with was "Well, we still have the heat death of the universe to worry about." But that didn't seem like the right answer. So he thought some more. "Is it that we had lost our purpose?" John wondered aloud, "Is the meaning of life to struggle?" he asked himself. "No, that can't be it. I have never struggled in my life, and I feel great. I'm content. So why am I even looking for problems to solve?" John began pacing across his apartment, getting more and more agitated. "Maybe it is a part of human nature to look for and solve problems?" he reasoned. "I'm doing it right now, aren't I? Looking for a problem to solve, even though there seemingly are none." Then, a realization struck him. "Aha! There it is! The problem is that there are no more problems for us to solve!" John exclaimed, his face turning from worry to excitement. "I shall not rest until the problem of lack of problems is solved." he stated, putting on his shoes and grabbing his ornamental broadsword. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only John, that whoever believes in him shall perish and not have eternal life. The End. |
