Not all women are into astrology, but all the people who are into astrology are women.

Actually, they're a very specific and weird subset of women. They almost always have these traits:

  • In their late teens to early/mid 20s
  • Into "witchcraft" unironically
  • Too into celebrity gossip
  • Think yoga and meditation is sacred
  • Have a completely delusional and out of touch view of Buddhism and Hinduism
  • Have at least one of the following: Comically proportioned glasses, excessive piercings, unnatural hair colors, "spiritual" tattoos
  • Think they're an "artist" of sorts

I've yet to meet an astrology fan who didn't have at least 80% of these.

A practitioner of magic without doctrine. Chaotes draw techniques and schemas from many different sources including paganism, psychology, and pop culture. We use whatever works to get the results we want, it doesn't have to form a unified belief system.

Many of us don't believe there's any such thing as an objective reality. Everything is subjective, which means we can use every subjectivity for its benefits and move between them freely.

Oh this is definitely the case. When I was younger, I was definitely the kind of guy to publicly ridicule things like astrology, and I learned that would make me no friends. Today I'd much rather surround myself with people who act kind to each other and accept each other. Y'all are totally on that same page.

yup. my idiot brother consciously made it his personality to dislike everything. he still can't figure out why he doesn't have friends. i've tried explaining how you build closer relationships over stuff you like rather than stuff you dislike. he doesn't like that.

sounds like the plot of a manga. teenagers of various zodiac birthdates come together to avert a solar system disaster with the power or friendship and shared trauma.

Nice.

And they keep calculating all the possible lifepaths to avoid this disaster but all of them always end up in weird places.

This isn't the 'gotcha' you think it is. I could just as well ask the fedora fanclub how they respond to someone saying 'bless you' when they sneeze. The point is there are local truths and there are global truths, and you don't have undistorted access to the latter. None of us are playing with a full deck. To use your own example of fiat money, we all know it's a society-wide fiction but it is...

I'm sure that sounded clever in your head

Bold argument from someone whose worldview is entirely reddit-tier pop science and affected rather than earned rationality.

But atheists never claim "Abraham had two dads", and anti-astrology people don't say "Geminis like jalapeƱos".

Ah right, because atheists and anti-astrologists are never guilty of error or logical fallacy? Oh wait.

I don't disagree, but it's twice as common among women. That's why there's a stereotype in the first place.

I don't know if the website has been updated recently, but http://www.whatstheharm.net/astrology.html has a pretty good record of the harm various pseudosciences have caused.

I mean, every single of these entries isn't caused by astrology but by other nonsense.

People fled because there was a warning of a cyclone, not because they believed in astrology.

Numerology is not astrology. People believing in witches is not astrology. Scammers will use anything including astrology.

And if those are the only examples, it really is less harmful then people make out.

What's sadder is that yoga, chakras, and crystals are traditionally from religions within the Indian subcontinent. Westerners are simply taking aspects of South Asian cultures, indigenous cultures, African cultures, and then bastardising them into marketable "neo-pagan witchcraft."

Turns out the modern world doesn't have much reverence for the sacred.

because they are nobody takes them seriously other than teenagers and other emotionally immature folks.

Personally I do find it interesting, when people do tell their Myers-Briggs -test results, since it can tell about, what sort of a person they want to be. But it is not scientific in the slightest.

I've been at some concerts where I've seen people holding up crystals saying that they are absorbing energy. Seems like harmless fun to me. They aren't out there killing people over it like religious people sometimes do.

I'll choose making fun of astrology.

even if i were male and straight, I don't think i could ever respect astrology...

but moreover, it's creepy as fuck for someone to pretend a change in their beliefs just for sex. that's kinda literally false pretense for sex. i know I'd never convince a jury of it, but as far as I'm concerned in my personal life, imagining doing such a thing fills me with revulsion and it crosses the line into sexual assault territory.

I like to think of astrology as a fine grained personality shorthand like Meyers Briggs. the magical star-assigned fixed personality is dumb. what's useful is being able to tell Becky to stop being such a Capricorn and come out and party, even if she is a cancer or whatever. it's just a memey way to reference behavioral traits if your friend group already knows what they mean. i don't know how ...

A trait can apply to anyone in any category. The whole premise is an exercise in the celebration of ignorance. I won't stand for it.

I don't think astrology begets antivax beliefs, though they do both fall under the woo-woo alternative health/spirituality umbrella. I know people who are into one or the other but not necessarily both.

It shows a lack of understanding which correlates nicely with other wrong beliefs, some of which are very harmful.

The one I dated was in her early 20's,

Was not into witchcraft or celebrity gossip.

Didn't do yoga or meditate.

Couldn't have told you the first thing about Buddhism or Hinduism.

Wore regular glasses

No piercings or tattoos or funny colored hair.

She is an artist with real talent. Her skills with an airbrush are still amazing. But she's more into designing and making jewelry these days. To be fair, we did need to have a discussion about painting the basement door a purple color with white and yellow flowers one time.

46 years later, she no longer reads the astrology column in the news paper

Cares even less about witches or celebrates

Still no yoga or meditation

Still wears regular glasses

No piercings of tattoos. She doesn't even dye her to cover the gray anymore.

Still clueless about Far East religions

But, her artistic talents are still on display. Though I wish she would pick up her sketch pad and air brush more these days. I miss her cuddled up next to me on the couch on a cold winter's night and quietly sketching away while I watch. And her artistic skills live on through our Daughters.

We have been married for 46 years now. Despite the fact she was into astrology and I listened intensely to her about it in the beginning. It is called learning everything about each other. And if anyone was "rapey", it was her.
These days she laughs and says it was the rebellious catholic upbringing in her, (I still call her a recovering Catholic). And that I was oblivious to all the hints she was dropping in front of me.

It all just one of the many shared memories we have together. I wouldn't give any of them up for life itself.

Its really not that easy.

Don't be a dick and let others be their kind of weird is in general good advice but you can make fun of someone without being a dick and "their kind of weird" might turn into something harmful.

It might be okay, not okay or there might even be a need to ridicule certain ideas depending on the situation.

If don't think it is reasonable to expect the public to entertain any ridiculous idea at all times, if you want to voice your believes/opinions you will have to let others do the same and they might not be nice about it. But lets be honest here a lot of "believes" aren't that nice themselves so......

A harmful ideology is not the same, and nothing close of what we are talking about.

Everyone have stupid believes, but not everyone is mocked. You cannot expect others to change their mind if you do not try yourself to consider what need is fulfill by this believe. As pointed in another comment, astrology is a way to make emotional connection with others. But one may have other reason we could not discover if we do no take their need and point of view seriously.

This is a critical approach, and how we made science. Disdain produce ignorance and social domination.

And even if one refuse to get medical assistance because of this believe (which is not in the core believe of astrology), you have more chance to convince that person after that honest investigation.

Not the people, industries do that.

People are very good at adopting whatever and thats mostly fine. Nobody is forced to partake in the corporate stuff. I also think its a bit unfair to westerners, we would like some culture too and we would not like to be restrained to christianity or the celtic stuff (that i personally like) but is very popular with nazis as well. In general living in the middle of europe everything native to my culture always feels a bit right wingey which many obviously dislike.

Being part of a foreign religion doesn't make it non bullshitty though. I will not just shit on any religion that i didn't grow up with but you can't argue that there aren't people everywhere commercializing and using religion in their own interest.

One could build a similar site about all the harm medicine has caused also, (and I'm sure there is one out there). That doesn't stop anyone from seeing a doctor when they are sick.

Anything can be used in a harmful way to cause ill to others. All it takes is the want to and a bit of creativity and a slick story.

We really need to distinguish between "stupid" opinions and "stupid" people.

Very smart people can hold very stupid opinions in some aspects and the average person will certainly hold some stupid ass opinions not necessarily restricted to "spirituality".

My uncle was top of his class but fell for every mlm he encounterd, my dad is a capable businessman but believes a cut up onion in the window will get all viruses out of the air. I have so many examples like that.

So half of women aren't stupid but probably 100% of all people hold at least one stupid "believe" i think.
